Samuel Smith. Adventurer, bon vivant, oenophile, philosopher. Just your everyday polymath typical of the Ben Franklins and Leonardo da Vincis we read about in our history books when we were wee tykes. The common denominator with most of these geniuses is that they love wine; and that’s where Samuel Smith comes in. After disembarking an English merchant vessel several years prior, Samuel started planting vines under the moonlight in 1849; thus starting the Yalumba winery in earnest. Six generations later, the Smith family still adheres to the philosophy set down by its founder in using sustainable practices and striving to reduce their impact on the environment. From having the largest solar system of any winery to observing minimal intervention, Yalumba continues to be in the vanguard of the biodynamic wine movement. Oh, and their wines are outstanding!
