song pairing:  ”you don’t own me” – lesley gore

from: Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

grapes: chardonnay
There’s a certain kind of song you just want to crank up after a bad breakup or a rough day at work. In 1963, a young singer renowned for a hit about getting ditched at a party unleashed just such a gem. Known as a pert pop princess who churned out bubblegum hits, Leslie Gore let loose with this beauty and inadvertently created an anthem that expresses a sense of independence, self-assertion, and resistance to societal expectations. In the wine world, Helena Lageder has managed to recreate that feeling in her Terra Alpina Chardonnay. Hailing from the Dolomites in northern Italy, Terra Alpina waves away any preconceived notions of what Chardonnay is supposed to be, forgoing the winemaking decisions that have led to the ‘buttery/oaky’ stereotype. Just like Gore’s empowering anthem, this wine’s lean, crisp, and vibrant style change the way we think about wine, and the limitations we place on the grapes that make it.
