Country: Italy
Region: Ruché du Castagnole Monferrato
Style: Super Duper Exclusive Reds

Ruché was on the verge of extinction until a new parish priest arrived in Castagnole Monferrato in the late 1960s. Don Giacomo Cauda came from a wine making family and became enamored with Ruché, believing it had qualities unlike any other grape in the region. Like some ecclesiastic superhero, Cauda was known to quickly change out of his Sunday vestments to work in his vineyard. So, with superhuman enthusiasm and know-how, he reinvigorated the entire wine growing region and is responsible for this still obscure grape variety in having its own appellation; Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato. La Miraja (me-rye-uh) was one of the first wineries in the area to walk in Father Cauda’s path and, consequently, has some of the oldest Ruché vines in the world. In fact, their Majole vineyard has long been considered the top site of Castagnole Monferrato which is easily one of the smallest and most exclusive appellations in the world.  And if that’s not enough to impress you, just check out that label!
