Country: Australia
Region: Margaret River
Style: Happy, Lucky Wine

Vasse Felix was the first established winery in one of the greatest wine regions of the world that nobody’s heard of, Margaret River. Isolated in a corner of Western Australia, it only contributes 2% to Australia’s total wine production, however commands over 20% of the premium market with wines that arguably lead the way as international benchmarks for Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz. Vasse Felix is named after a French maritime explorer (T. Timothèe Vasse) who was swept up by the waves and thrown into the ocean back in 1801. For years afterward, rumors of Vasse’s  circumstances circulated among the maritime community until he was discovered in 1833 living with a community of indigenous people; the father of 8 children, 26 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. When Dr. Cullity established this winery in 1967 he named it after the lost French explorer (Vasse) and Felix which means “happy, lucky” in Latin.
