Ok, guys. Let’s cut to the quick. Of all the grapes listed for this blend, the one you probably know the least about is Pinotage. It’s a crossing of Cinsault and Pinot Noir that first appeared in 1925 and has been polarizing drinkers ever since. What most winemakers didn’t realize was that Pinotage is a tricky wine to make well. So for over 75 years we were left with a wine that on its best days tasted like peaty scotch and used band-aids all the other days. Fortunately, since the turn of the century, a handful of very skilled winemakers have focused on reducing crop yields and thoughtful winemaking techniques to make otherworldly examples of this misunderstood variety. One of the trailblazers in producing high quality Pinotage is Kanonkop, run by the brothers Paul and Johann Krige. Under their expert ministrations, they’ve crafted a red wine blend that shows off this pesky grape in its best light. So dive in already.  What are you waiting for?
