Country: Australia
Region: Barossa
Style: My English, She’s not so elegant

Talk about running with someone else’s idea and killing it!  That’s exactly what Australia is doing with Côtes du Rhône blends and is, in fact, beating the French at their own game. Add a Bulgarian expat who learned how to make wine as a young girl by translating and interpreting barrel tastings with old-timer winemakers and you’ll have a remarkable story. By 16, Elena Brooks was making her own wines.  And after studying and working in many amazing wine regions of the world, she settled down in the Barossa Valley of South Australia and is now producing wine that melts our minds.

Looking at the list of grapes in this wine you’re probably thinking to yourself, ‘what in the hell is this?!”  Shiraz is what Australians call Syrah and Mataro is what they call Mourvèdre. What else would you expect from a country that calls chickens “chooks”, mosquitos “mozzies”, and women “sheilas”?
