I love the pot-luck format of many Thanksgiving feasts: the cornucopia of green bean casserole and sweet potato iterations, the experimental concoctions of serious home chefs, and the array of different wines that bless this annual tradition. One year, my Great Great Aunt Tess, who is on a small fixed income, brought a few bottles of wine that floored everyone who tried it. We all know how aunt Tess operates; she simply buys the least expensive option of whatever she’s planning on bringing to the party (understandably so) with her contributions typically on the underwhelming side. Little did Aunt Tess know that she was buying wine from a criminally undervalued area of the wine world: Portugal. Armed with new technology and utilizing indigenous grapes, the newer, younger winemakers of this region are producing wines that are blowing the minds of sommeliers, wine geeks, and collectors the world over. I remember seeing Aunt Tess watching the turkey day proceedings and noticed her look of smug satisfaction as everyone got enthusiastically purple-toothed on Broadbent’s Douro Reserve. Hooray for accidental heroines, hooray for Great Great Aunt Tess!!
