Country: Germany
Region: Franken
Style: Summer Wines to Fall for

Pinot Grigio has long reigned as the unofficial white wine of American summer. We’re interested in the path less traveled and turn our friends onto unsung hero grapes.  So, with that in mind, it’s time to consider alternatives to this neutral Italian white. And since summer lasts until December in these parts we thought we’d show you an uncommon German grape we love; Silvaner. In the early 20th century, Silvaner dominated as Germany’s most popular variety and played an important role in Germany’s bulk wine, or Liebfraumilch era, a period the country’s vintners very likely wish many would forget. Today, however, it accounts for only 5% of the country’s plantings. Change is afoot though and in the hands of capable producers like Schiferkopf, Silvaner dons its cape and takes flight.  This is not your großmutter’s Silvaner!
